چکیده

Despite a focus on teaching mathematics through challenging, problem solving tasks, there has been limited research into student attitudes towards these learning experiences. To address this gap in the literature, we asked 52 Australian primary students who had recently experienced taught manner to convey their feelings about solving. Adopting qualitative design, participants completed brief questionnaire, and sub-set also contributed follow-up groups. Thematic analysis of questionnaire data revealed that three-quarters reported unambiguously positive solving, most others were ambivalent, no expressed negative attitudes. Younger (Year 3/4) more likely express than older 5/6) boys girls. Positive arose from enjoying perception it supported learning, thriving challenge. Follow-up groups reinforced power working collaboratively, particularly importance discussions with peers, opportunities explore authentic purposeful tasks. The findings help explain why frequently have reactions

Attitudes towards Mathematics, Self-efficacy and Achievement in Problem-solving

The aim of this study was to explore relationships between students’ attitudes towards Mathematics, self-efficacy beliefs in problem-solving and achievement. The possibility of attitudes and selfefficacy to predict problem-solving performance was also examined. Attitude and efficacy scales were completed by 238 fifth-grade pupils. Problem-solving performance was measured by a specially prepared...

What’s So Good About Problem-Based Learning?

In a systematically designed and controlled experiment conducted in a naturalistic instructional setting, we examined adult students’ learning of two concepts. Two intact classes taught by the same instructor were assigned to 1 of 2 conditions. In 1 class, instruction was problem based for 1 concept. For a second concept, lecture/discussion was theexclusivemethod. In theotherclass,matchingofcon...

Assessing Student Problem-Solving Skills With Complex-Based Tasks

Valid formative assessment is an essential element in improving both student learning and the professional development of educators. Various shortcomings in common assessment modalities, however, hinder our ability to make and evaluate such formative decisions. The diffusion of computer technology into American classrooms offers new opportunities to evaluate student learning and a rich, new sou...

Towards IRT-based student modeling from problem solving steps

In this research, we use Item Response Theory based model for computing procedural knowledge of a sample of primary school children solving fraction addition exercises. For each exercise, the model needs to automatically construct a solution graph. We have explored different strategies for building such graphs and the effects they have on the quality of the model predictions. The results obtain...
